Pediatric Dentistry FAQ
Below are common questions and our answers about early dental treatment and the best ways to ensure your child’s teeth are best cared for.
What is pediatric dentistry?
Pediatric dentistry is a specialized field of dentistry that focuses on the oral health of children from infancy through adolescence. A pediatric dentist has an additional two to three years of specialized training after completing dental school, which enables them to provide comprehensive and high-quality dental care for infants, children, and teenagers.
Why is it important for my child to see a pediatric dentist?
Early dental care is crucial in establishing good oral hygiene habits and preventing dental problems in the future. A pediatric dentist is not only trained to handle the unique needs of children’s growing teeth, but also has experience in dealing with dental anxiety in young patients. Regular visits to a pediatric dentist can help prevent cavities, monitor for proper tooth development, and address any potential issues before they become more serious.
When should my child have their first dental visit?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children have their first dental visit by the age of one or when their first tooth appears. This early introduction to the dentist can help your child become familiar with the office and build a positive relationship with their pediatric dentist. It is recommended that children visit a pediatric dentist every six months for routine check-ups and cleanings.
What if my child has dental anxiety?
It is normal for children to feel anxious about visiting the dentist. However, our pediatric dentists are trained in dealing with dental anxiety in young patients and will work to make your child feel comfortable and at ease during their visit. They may use techniques such as show and tell, distraction, or gentle sedation to help alleviate any fears.
What can I do to prevent cavities in my child?
Proper dental hygiene is essential in preventing cavities in children. This includes brushing twice a day with a pea-sized amount of fluoridated toothpaste, flossing daily, and limiting sugary snacks and drinks. Regular visits to the pediatric dentist for check-ups and cleanings are also crucial in preventing cavities.
